Diving enthusiasts come from all over the world to Thailand, where the Pacific meets the Indian Ocean. Gorgeous underwater scenery and vibrant reef-dwelling marine life make the North Andaman region a world-class dive site, and diving is possible year-round.
In the Andaman Sea the best time for diving is between October and April, and in the Gulf for Thailand from May to September.
Divers should also note that of Thailand’s 100-plus national parks, more than 20 are marine parks. Mu Ko Similan National Park, an archipelago made up of nine islands in the Andaman Sea, is best known for its dive sites, of which there are two kinds:
- The East side diving offers up gently rolling coral reefs.
- While the west side is geared more toward adventurous divers and is known for its underwater granite boulders and swim-throughs.
If your couple has never dived before, but would like to try, there are numerous resorts where they can learn the sport and get certified by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). PADI Five Star Dive Centers can be found in Phuket, Phi Phi Islands, Ko Samui, Krabi and elsewhere in peninsular southern Thailand, as well as Pattaya in the east.
